
DeWitt started her stage career at age 13. At 13 Dewitt started performing on stage. She received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Ball State University. In her summer production she was persuaded by the director to apply to UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was given the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA, she worked as a secretary until her television debut on the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to reports that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that the two have never met. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 series is among her most famous. She was chosen to play the show's pilot and then was hired. She also portrayed Janet in an episode from 1979 on the spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in Three's Company's 1984 finale. She then appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she stopped acting for several years. The stage was her first time back to the stage in the month of June in 1991 when she played a part in a Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. One of her roles was in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! A character based on her, voiced by another actress, was featured in a 1997 episode on Pinky and the Brain. The actress was in the episode Cybill and made a brief appearance in Living Single's final episode.
