Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for over 20 years. She is also an accomplished public speaker. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos which include commentary on the representations of women that are prevalent in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit educational site that explores female representations in popular cultural narratives is founded and directed by Sarkeesian. In her efforts to dispel the myths associated with women in pop culture, she seeks to bring attention to the targeted harassment of women as well as other classes of people in the online space. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Apart from being a popular public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since a young age. In 2009, when she was in university she launched the Feminist Frequency site. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet that would examine gender representations in video games. But, she was the target of cyber-bullying. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered the determination of a feminist critic of media. As a result of the many achievements she's made for feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency, an educational nonprofit that studies the way women are depicted in popular culture narratives.
